Because I Need Another Project Like I Need a Hole In The Head

I have been looking for a chair. When we decided that I would have my separate space, I was ridiculously excited. I haven’t had my very own dedicated space EVER. I kid you not. Born a twin, I shared a womb for crying out loud. I lived in my parent’s home (sharing a room with my brother first and then my younger sister) until I was 18 and then moved in with my aunt. Technically I had my own room but it was filled with her furniture and she used the dresser & storage in the room and I got kicked out whenever her son came to visit. Then I moved in with my boyfriend (now husband) and the rest is history. You can imagine what a thrill it was to me, to think of having a room where it was all about me.

The reality of it is a little less exciting. I have a desk and a chair from the kitchen. There is no storage at all. My super awesome iMac feels like it’s touching my nose half the time. The walls were completely blank until I got some canvas samples last week to put up. The truth is … my little office is pathetic. So much so, I have to talk myself into working in it. It is because of this, that I’ve been on a mission to make it better. I need storage storage storage and some comfy seating. This weekend I headed down to La Conner, WA to go antique shopping. While my meal at the Calico Cupboard was ridiculously delicious and their treats made me decide to live my life as slightly rotund … the antique shopping was not quite so life changing.  We headed down to Snohomish, WA where I found several things to cheer me. I was on the hunt for a chair. For right now, book shelves aren’t quite in my budget. There were a few really awesome finds and it ended up being hard to choose from. Eventually it was a green chair at Victoria Village that made the cut. I chose it because it was comfortable to sit in, had the cool tufting that I love, and was in my price range. I  was so excited I figured I can un-uglify it later. It can also do double duty work as a prop for the time being. Sounds good huh?

The reality

This chair is sort of awesome. If I had 5 bazillion dollars, I would get it reupholstered. Wait. Who am I kidding? If I had 5 bazillion dollars I would have probably just snagged that chair at Anthropologie that I love. Ohhh or maybe have my dream chair hand made!  Anyway, I am going to do this myself. See where the “hole in the head” title came from? I don’t know the first thing about upholstering furniture. I didn’t even try to start off easy either. I always do this. I take on more than I probably should and just have to laugh. I wonder how long this little project is going to take me? Few weeks? Few months? Few Years?  We shall see! I just hope I don’t destroy the thing!

Mission: paint the wood white & antique reupholster in aqua fabric. No over stuffing … keep it as close to the same shape and style as possible. Also don’t destroy it.

As you can see, it is entirely possible to update this type of chair and make it look good. This upholstery job was done by a professional though.

I’m wanting to do the upholstery in an aqua color and paint the wood a cream/off-white sort of as pictured but a slightly deeper shade of aqua. Though it is my plan to keep the deep diamond tufting and not to overstuff it, I would be excited to make it look anything like this.
